WAHH Quantum SensationsBy Starck & Edwards | 0 Comments
AN EXPLOSION OF CULINARY SENSATION IN THE SMALLEST IMAGINABLE FORM
Imagine the possibility of enjoying the pleasure of alcohol without worrying about negative consequences, to have the sensation of light-headedness, without the risk of losing your senses, not to say utter drunkenness. To have the sensorial pleasure of alcohol without posing a threat to your health. This is the potential of WA|HH Quantum Sensations, a new mini spray invented by Philippe Starck and David Edwards. WA|HH Quantum Sensations is an invitation to experience an explosion of culinary sensation in the smallest imaginable form.
How It Happened
At the origin of the experiment: an encounter. That of Philippe Starck, creator of international renown and David Edwards, founder of Le Laboratoire, Harvard Professor, and creator of the new field of aerosol cuisine. Their commonality? The re-invention of daily experience. Their exploratory ground? The immateriality of taste and texture.
From their encounter comes WA|HH Quantum Sensations, a mini spray of flavor that, while extremely small (each cartridge holds 2 milliliters of liquid), delivers 20-25 actuations that provide a gustatory and olfactive effect equivalent to a volume 1000 times as voluminous. WA|HH Quantum Sensations can be enjoyed as a spray directly into the mouth or onto foods of all kinds.
The Briefest Light-Headedness
WA|HH Quantum Sensations has the capacity to liberate alcohol flavors and transient vapor with minute quantities of alcohol in the form of tiny micro-particles*. The vapor from a single actuation produces a slight light-headedness, but it passes almost immediately. Taste and memory of an intense sensation remain. The quantity of alcohol that enters the body, what we call a quantum, is so small that the effects of WA|HH Quantum Sensations are transient, like an emotion.
* An actuation delivers approximately 0.075 ml of alcohol liquid in the form of micro particles. This ‘quantum of alcohol’ is far too small to stimulate drunkenness, being nearly 1000 times smaller than a shot of alcohol (a shot contains approximately 40-60 ml). It would therefore take several hundreds of actuations of WAHH Quantum Sensations to deliver the alcohol content to the body of a standard glass of alcohol.
A Sensorial Exploration
Among the videos, images and scientific explanations, the exhibition of the two first flavors of the series, WA|HH Flash Quantum and WA|HH Demon Quantum, invite the visitor to powerful and distinctive sensations. Tested by spraying directly into the mouth or onto sweet and salty bites of food (to experience in the Showroom or at the Ephemeral Bar), the surprise is gripping.
As Philippe Starck says - “Everyone has an occasional need of light-headedness, distraction, and another place … But our societies and codes of amusement have led to the over-consumption of alcoholic beverages as a kind of social placebo. The consequences are too familiar. With David Edwards, we asked ourselves whether we might provide the same agreeable sensation as comes with a sip of alcohol without running the risk of drunkenness. And WA|HH was born. Accent life with a magic wand, that was our desire”.
WA|HH Flash Quantum
When freshness offers itself as a revivifying breath, the taste buds reanimate our senses. WA|HH Flash Quantum offers a tonic flavor for a strong and instantaneous sensation. Vaporized directly in the mouth, the flavors are freed on the palate and leave a invigorating and immediate impression. Surprise guaranteed.
WA|HH Demon Quantum
Spice up your life? Give an instant sting for a moment of dazzling pleasure? WA|HH Demon Quantum wakes the senses up and kindles the spirit. With its spicy, wooded and slightly fruity flavors, WA|HH Demon Quantum guarantees a surprising feeling of euphoria.
Ideal to vaporize on salty or sweet foods alike, WA|HH Demon Quantum offers a truly sensory exploration.
Q&A with David Edwards
Is The WAHH intended to intoxicate? What is its purpose?
The WAHH is not intended to intoxicate. It is a spray that is designed to be applied directly to food (see our website www.quantumsensations.com). It can be sprayed into the mouth just as you can spray any food spray -- soy sauce, catchup -- into the mouth. What is interesting when you do is that the aerosol nature of the delivery creates a strong olfactive sensation. This is very transient since the quantity delivered is extremely small (as in microliters). This same sensation comes from spraying WAHH on food although it is less intense.
What ‘sensations’ does the WAHH provide?
WAHH is sold with cartridges of flavor. We are beginning to sell WAHH with two such cartridges. We call a cartridge a quantum.
Flash Quantum and Demon Quantum. Both of these have alcohol. Future Quantum formulations will not have alcohol. WAHH is not uniquely dependent on alcohol. The three kinds of sensations that can be delivered with WAHH include gustatory, olfactive, and light-headedness. All three are provided with these first two WAHH products. Flash provides the latter, Demon especially the first and second.
What is meant precisely by light-headedness?
When we say light-headedness this is far from inebriation. Our product is designed actually to avoid inebriation as we have been saying from the day we opened our exhibition at Le Laboratoire. There is, on spraying WAHH Flash Quantum Sensation on food, and even more strongly on spraying it in your mouth, the sensation of light-headedness, but it is very transient, and the alcohol that enters your mouth is 1/1000th of a shot.
How does WAHH produce this sensation?
The reason for the sensation is that an aerosol of the 50 - 75 microliters of liquid sprayed into your mouth produces approximately 1000 times more surface area on spraying than it would were you to simply deliver it as a single drop in your mouth.
This surface area produces more vapor than you would otherwise have and it is this vapor that produces the slight light-headedness. It is transient because there is effectively no alcohol in the body and therefore nothing sustains it.
What are the tastes of the first two Quantum Sensations?
The taste and formulation of Flash Quantum resembles Vodka.
However the taste is obscure, difficult to identify. We wished to provide with WAHH sensations and not easily recognized tastes. Demon Quantum is a very strong spice flavor and olfactive sensation.
Is there any chance, if one emptied an entire cartridge, that one could get drunk?
No, not at all. Even if you delivered an entire Flash Quantum into your mouth, 20-25 actuations, you would still not have 2 ml of liquid in your body. If the goal is inebriation, this is not the product to use.
Where is the product sold? Where will it be sold?
The product has launched at The Lab Store Paris (www.labstoreparis.com) and will later this summer launch (very likely with new Quantum Sensations) in leading design stores around the world. We imagine the product selling in design stores, restaurants, hotels, and, where it comes to the non-alcohol version, in more mass market settings.
