DARNLEY’S VIEW GIN: NAMED AFTER THE MOMENT MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS FIRST SAW HER HUSBAND

AWARD-WINNING LONDON DRY GIN Darnley’s ViewScotland,1565. Mary Queen of Scots first spies her future husband, Lord Darnley through the courtyard window of Wemyss Castle, the historic family seat of renowned vintners and spirits merchants, the Wemyss family (pronounced 'weems'). Today, in recognition of this defining moment, Wemyss bring you the superbly balanced, handcrafted Darnley's View Gin.

The Gin

Darnley’s View is made in the time honoured way by redistilling the botanicals with a four times distilled neutral grain spirit in a pot still. The gin is a London Dry Gin so no flavours are added after distillation- only purified water to reduce gin to its bottling strength.

Why London and not Scotland given our Scottish heritage? Simple. Because we want to create a completely authentic gin in gin’s historic home; one which would appeal to those who appreciate the history and provenance of this iconic white spirit.

Darnley’s View Gin OriginalThe Original: Six Carefully Selected Botanicals:

Darnley’s View is made with six carefully selected berries, seeds, peels, roots and flowers known collectively as the botanicals.

The principal botanicals in our family recipe are juniper, lemon peel and elderflower. Bottled at 40% ABV to accentuate the floral, citrus notes.

Juniper

In our gin the distinctive pine, lavender camphor-like flavour of the juniper berry is the keynote around which all the other botanicals are built.

We select the most aromatic, oil rich berries which grow in Southern Europe.

Lemon Peel

Lemon peel dried in the Spanish sunshine adds a fresh crisp bite.

Coriander Seed

Coriander seed from Morocco contributes warm, gingery, sage like flavours and a soft spiciness.

Angelica Root

The woody notes of dried angelica root from France helps to make our gin dry.

Orris Root

We source our orris from the Benelux countries and its aromatic fragrant notes contribute earthy complex flavours and hints of Parma Violet.

Elderflower

Elder trees grow freely on our Scottish estate. The delicate fruity flavours of elderflower are not only a reminder of our Scottish heritage, they also add an extra special floral dimension to our gin.

AWARD-WINNING LONDON DRY GIN Darnley’s ViewAbout Wemyss

Our family name, pronounced ‘Weems’, comes from the Gaelic word for caves which stems from the rocky outcrop on the Firth of Forth on which our family home, Wemyss Castle, sits.

Looking back towards Edinburgh, the castle has been the family seat for over six centuries.

Darnley’s View is our latest brainchild. With renowned expertise for the production of fine wines and spirits, our gin is made from a family recipe and captures the moment in 1565 when Mary Queen of Scots spied her future husband, Lord Darnley, through the courtyard window at Wemyss Castle.

From this marriage came a prince who later united the thrones of England and Scotland as James VI and Ist.

We like to think of Darnley’s son, conceived through a union that began at Wemyss, as a symbol of our desire to combine the best of England and Scottish distilling to create a unique gin.
