GLENMORANGIE: UNNECESSARILY WELL-MADE WHISKIES

Glenmorangie single malt Scotch whisky originates in the Scottish Highlands where, at the Glenmorangie Distillery, it is distilled in the tallest malt whisky stills in Scotland, expertly matured in the finest oak casks, and perfected by the Men of Tain. The Distillery was founded in 1843 and is renowned as a pioneer in its field uniting tradition with innovation to create ‘unnecessarily well made whiskies.’

We Think You’ll Find Us Intriguing

We’re distinctive:

Glĕn / mỏ / r’nje is Gaelic for ‘valley of big peace’.  We pronounce it ‘orangey’: say, ‘Glenmorangie’

We’re extraordinary:

Imagine a fully grown adult male giraffe.  It’s the same height as the necks of our stills, making them Scotland’s tallest.

We’re preferred:

We’re Scotland’s favourite whisky; and have been for almost 30 years.

We’re meticulous:

We take one of the smallest spirit ‘cuts’ in the industry – keeping the best of the best for maturation.

We’re selected for a discerning taste:

Glenmorangie was served on Concorde throughout its lifetime.

We’re favoured:

Paris, St Tropez, Geneva…the homes to which Bridget Bardot shipped 36 cases of Glenmorangie.

We’re the first:

We launched the world’s first wood-finished whisky expression in 1987; initiating a new category of single malt whisky.

We’re forward-thinking:

Our Distillery is one of the few in Scotland to have been owned by a woman, Ann Matheson.  Our founder’s widow, she retained Glenmorangie for 25 years from 1862-1887.

We have a rich history of discerning clientele:

The Lord Mayor of London had Glenmorangie delivered to his official London residence over one hundred years ago in 1899.

We’re global:

In 1880 Glenmorangie was shipped to San Francisco.  We have continued to export to the USA for over 100 years.

We’re ahead of our time:

We launched the first single malt whisky brand website in the world in 1995 and hosted the first ever on-line single malt whisky tasting event in 1997.

We’re distinguished:

“Industry leader of the year” has been awarded to our Head of Distilling and Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden, three times.  That’s more than any other figure in the whisky industry.

The Glenmorangie Private Edition Range

Glenmorangie’s Private Edition is an award winning special range that provides the occasional opportunity for the Glenmorangie Whisky Creation Team to share rare, limited samples of its rich and innovative experimentations to whisky connoisseurs and aficionados. Glenmorangie Artein marks the third release in this range – and the latest one – previous releases were; Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX – a full bodied whisky, extra matured in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and Glenmorangie Finealta – an exquisite recreation of a 1900s recipe from the Glenmorangie archives with subtle notes of peat.

Glenmorangie Artein – A Monumental Whisky Born Of Stone

GLENMORANGIE World Famous Single Malt Scotch WhiskiesGlenmorangie was proud to announce the release of Glenmorangie Artein, the third release in its award winning Private Edition range in 2011. ‘Artein’ is the Scots Gaelic for stone and this release is an intriguing assemblage of 15 and 21 Years Old Glenmorangie, extra matured in ‘Super Tuscan’ wine casks.

Stone has always been at the heart of the making of Glenmorangie single malt Scotch whisky.  Glenmorangie has its own unique hard water source – the Tarlogie Spring – which slowly filters through layers of limestone, adding rich minerals that eventually give Glenmorangie its complex fruity aromas.  The Company has a great affinity with stone as close to Glenmorangie Distillery in the Scottish Highlands an ancient stone of symbolic significance was uncovered – the Hilton of Cadboll Stone. Glenmorangie proudly adopted an intricate Pictish motif from this iconic monument as its brand emblem.

Widely regarded as a pioneer in extra maturation and with a true passion for innovation, it is no surprise that Dr Bill Lumsden, Head of Distilling & Whisky Creation for Glenmorangie, felt a strong affinity with a highly talented group of ‘Super Tuscan’ producers, celebrated for breaking with Italian tradition. The rugged Tuscan coastal hills, built on stony foundations, are a seemingly improbable area for vineyards. However, the stones play an important role in the development of these fine wines. The vines are forced to delve deep into the soil seeking nourishment; as a result the grapes claim intense flavour from this unique terroir.

Dr Lumsden commented: “Wine is one of my huge passions and I was fascinated by the role stony ground played in cultivating the vines - therefore influencing the flavour profile of the famed ‘Super-Tuscan’ wines. I was inspired to experiment with extra maturing Glenmorangie in these wine casks and was thrilled with the result – a rich, outstandingly fragrant whisky – born of stone.”

Glenmorangie Artein’s recipe comprises two-thirds of hand selected 15 years old whisky with a special additional third of 21 year old whisky. The spirit started its maturation in American white oak ex-bourbon casks before individually spending a period of extra maturation in Super Tuscan wine casks.

On nosing, Glenmorangie Artein recalls a sweet and heady bouquet of ripe red berries, honeysuckle and fresh mint. On the palate, sun soaked baked fruits such as ripe apricots, peaches and plums harmonise gracefully with hints of spearmint and cherries in milk chocolate. A whisky of great length, Glenmorangie Artein finishes with high notes of zesty, lemon sherbet and a flourish of creamy cappuccino.

The Journey In Steps

  • Our pioneering spirit begins in 1843 when William Matheson disregards traditional onion-shaped whisky stills for tall ex-gin stills.  He establishes the Distillery and obtains our licence to distil.
  • Our Distillery is acquired by The Glenmorangie Distillery Company Ltd in 1887, formed by a consortium of businessmen from London and Tain.
  • Expatriate Scots in the British Empire colonies, Europe and the USA inspire our travels and we begin exporting in the 1880s.
  • By the 1900s, our customers include the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, the Savoy Hotel in London and Britain’s Royal Navy ships.
  • Our Distillery is acquired by the Leith based import and export firm Macdonald & Muir (the forerunner of The Glenmorangie Company) in 1918.
  • By the 1940s we revolutionise whisky production in Scotland by starting to use American oak ex-bourbon barrels instead of the traditional Spanish oak ex-sherry casks.
  • With increasing demand, we double our stills from two to four in 1977.
  • In 1982 Glenmorangie becomes Scotland’s best-selling single malt - a title that we have held almost continuously since then.

  • To protect the purity of our uniquely mineral-rich water source, we purchase Tarlogie Springs and the surrounding 840 acres in 1989.  We also acquire Glenmorangie House at Cadboll, close to the Distillery.
  • Four more of Scotland’s tallest stills join the existing four in 1990.
  • In 1991 we introduce our ‘Designer Casks’, hand-selecting the finest slow-grown American white oak from the Ozark Mountains in Missouri to mature our precious spirit.
  • Glenmorangie Port Wood finish was released in 1994, the first of what would become the extra-matured range.
  • We launch the world’s first single malt whisky brand website in 1995, along with the world’s first single malt whisky television advertising campaign.
  • We introduce the Glenmorangie Wood Finish Range in 1996, the first range of extra matured Scotch whiskies.
  • In 1997 Dr Bill Lumsden (Head of Distilling and Whisky Creation) hosts the world’s first on-line tasting session on our website.
  • Malt Advocate‘s ‘Industry Leader of the Year’ is awarded to Dr Bill Lumsden in 2001.  He has won the title three times in the 21st century, more than any other industry leader.
  • In 2002, we install new washbacks (the huge vessels used to create the liquid that is distilled into whisky) to significantly increase Distillery production capacity.

  • 2003 sees Glenmorangie receive esteemed recognition as ‘Distiller of the Year’ from Whisky Magazine.
  • We become established as the whisky Maison within Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) in 2005.
  • We launch Glenmorangie Margaux Cask Finish in 2006 to critical acclaim.  Expertly combining the ‘Spirit of Scotland’ with the ‘Soul of France’.
  • We’re honoured with the coveted title of ‘Innovator of the Year’ by Whisky Magazine in 2007 for our Extra Matured Range.
  • Glenmorangie Signet, exhibiting an extraordinary taste and rare ingredients, and Glenmorangie Astar, matured in ultimate designer American white oak casks, are introduced in 2008.  Again, we are distinguished with the ‘Innovator of the Year’ award.
  • We further enhance production capability as eight stills become twelve in 2009.  We also release Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX, extra matured in ex-Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks, as the first Private Edition.  It’s awarded ‘Best New Scotch’ in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.
  • 2010 sees further accolade as Dr Bill Lumsden is honoured with the prestigious ‘Outstanding Achievement in the Scotch Whisky Industry’, awarded by the International Wines and Spirits Competition.
  • We globally launch Glenmorangie Finealta, our second Private Edition, in 2011, with the European launch held at the newly restored Savoy Hotel in London.

We’re Unique: We Have The Tallest Stills In Scotland

At the very heart of Glenmorangie Distillery, nestled deep in the rugged Scottish Highlands, we’re proud to boast the tallest stills in Scotland.  They are key to perfecting our collection of unique and award-winning whisky expressions; and have been for over 160 years.

In 1843, our founder, William Matheson, broke whisky-making tradition in departing from using onion-shaped stills and purchased two ex-gin stills.  That pioneering move is central to our story of innovating whisky production and, today, each one of our twelve stills is modelled on those two original ex-gin stills.

Housed in our magnificent ‘cathedral-like’ Still House, they are simply extraordinary.  At over five metres tall (16 feet 10¼ inches) the necks alone are the same height as a fully grown giraffe!  Unlike smaller, traditional onion shaped stills, the height of our stills means that the heavier, leathery flavours can’t reach the top.  Thus, only the most delicate and purest vapours ascend to the full height of their magnificent copper necks, condensing into a distinctive complex, beautifully layered, pure spirit ready for maturation

We’re Experts When It Comes To Casks

What’s really fundamental in the painstaking method of maturing Glenmorangie whisky is our unswerving commitment to only ever using a cask twice.  Many other producers may use casks up to six or seven times; but we simply refuse to.

And, as we don’t ever do anything half-heartedly at Glenmorangie and are utterly committed to our passion and science, we travel over 5000 miles to the northern slopes of the Ozark Mountains in Missouri to seek the perfect wood for maturation.

There, we hand select the very best slow-growth American white oak trees, which means that the wood has a highly porous nature. The oak is air seasoned for at least two years and then the staves are formed into casks, which are heavily toasted and lightly charred to an exact specification.  This method enables us to fully capture and accentuate the best flavours from the wood.

Our casks are finally leased to Bourbon or Tennessee producers for seasoning and to remove harshness.  Only after this lengthy and authentic process are they worthy of receiving our precious spirit and the label of a Glenmorangie ‘designer cask’, predominantly used for Glenmorangie Astar and Signet.

We go to these extremes to mature Glenmorangie because it’s all about creating a rounder, smoother whisky; and that involves using oak of the finest provenance for at least ten years. As around sixty per cent of the whisky’s flavour comes from the cask, selecting and crafting the highest quality oak and using it only twice is simply essential to us. This produces a subtly fragrant spirit with a vanilla smoothness and complex depth of flavours, in which over 140 aromas have been detected in our expressions. We believe being experts in creating perfect casks is simply worth the extra effort.

We’re Pioneers In Extra-Maturation Techniques

In the 1980s Glenmorangie pioneered the original concept of extra-maturation using a variety of exclusive ex-wine casks.  Our Whisky Creation Team are still the leading experts in this field as we painstakingly explore the most distinguished vineyards of Europe in the search for exceptional casks. These casks will provide rich, intriguing and compelling layers of flavours and tastes to the original character of Glenmorangie.

Our unprecedented technique of extra-maturation allows the pure spirit to lie in the peaceful darkness and solitude of fine American white oak ex-bourbon casks for at least ten years before we transfer it to different, high quality casks for a further two years.  Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban extra matures in ex-port pipes from the Quintas (or wine estates) of Portugal; Glenmorangie Lasanta in ex-Oloroso Sherry casks from Jerez in Spain; and Glenmorangie Nectar D’Òr in ex-Sauternes wine barriques from France.

At their heart, the Extra Matured Range whiskies have the quintessentially Glenmorangie character, but each particular exclusive cask gives additional and individual qualities, forming a unique expression influenced by each distinguished provenance;  a journey for whisky-enthusiasts to explore and discover such a range of tastes, flavours, aromas and textures!

We’d Like To Host You At Our Distillery

A visit to our Distillery is rather special with our unique cathedral-like Still House at its heart. Simple raw ingredients are transformed into a spirit of rare finesse and subtlety in a meticulous and ingenious fashion. Our famous twelve majestic stills fill the vast cavernous space, with their long, elegant copper necks. As the tallest stills in Scotland, they are to the same specification as the second-hand ex-gin stills our pioneering founder purchased in 1843.

Visitors can also meet the legendary ‘Men of Tain’, our skilled craftsmen who ensure that Glenmorangie is made in the same unhurried and uncompromising way it has been throughout its long and distinguished history. Visitors will be enlightened with the intricacies of our craft, an insight only enhanced by a tasting of a wee dram of our ‘Unnecessarily Well Made’ single malt whiskies.

GLENMORANGIE World Famous Single Malt Scotch Whiskies

Overlooking the shores of the Moray Firth, Glenmorangie House is the perfect haven in which to immerse in our spirit and heritage. It’s a secluded retreat with a warm and welcoming atmosphere conducive to exploring our distinguished whisky expressions.

From our house, guests can enjoy plenty of pastimes – perhaps a walk along our unspoilt beach, a round of golf and a visit to our Distillery. Our award winning cuisine sourced from our own kitchen garden, a surrounding farm or the nearby sea completes a day’s activities. We strive for perfection in hospitality as we do in crafting our whisky expressions.

And a visit to our home and Distillery would not be complete without adding a little local cultural knowledge. Our exquisite Glenmorangie logo was adopted by our Distillers from the incredible engravings on an eighth century Pictish Stone, the Hilton of Cadboll, that was carved near the Distillery. An ancient civilisation, the Picts, ruled northern Scotland, and intricately carved the stone depicting a people of pride, strength and confidence. It seems only appropriate that we should be inspired by such a feat to represent the innovation and multi-layered complexity of our whisky’s refined quality.
