By utilising Taiwan’s unique natural resources and remarkable technological skills, aiming for the first and the best whisky distillery in Taiwan, Kavalan distillery of King Car Group was founded.

King Car group, with more than 2000 employees, was established in 1956 and runs business in several fields: beverages, food, biotechnology, aquaculture, and others. It is particularly famous for its RTD (Ready-To-Drink) coffee, Mr. Brown which is also available in Europe.

The founder of the group has spent years searching for the perfect site, with the ideal water supply. He chose Yilan as the site for its abundant supply of cold and pure spring water flowing through the Snow Mountain. The air in Yilan is considered to be the cleanest and freshest in Taiwan. It is the fresh air that gives Kavalan whisky its smooth, creamy and refreshing character.

The effort goes into every drop of new make spirit and every seasoned cask we choose. Coupled with the mastery of the blender, they ensure the silky smoothness and distinctive flavours of Kavalan whisky. The first bottle of Kavalan was released in December 2008 and it is now the best-selling expression in the range. The recipe of classic Kavalan is complex and contains different types of casks- fresh bourbon, fresh sherry, refill casks and other wine casks rendering the spirit a multilayer of fruity and floral notes.

There is also an incredible visitor centre on site. This neo-Classical visitor centre, or convention centre is decorated with marble internally and dressed stone externally. More than one million visitors come to the distillery every year. It comes as no surprise that the Whisky Magazine has named Kavalan distillery 2011 World Icons of Whisky, “Whisky Visitor Attraction of the Year”.

Kavalan, the earliest tribe that inhabited Yilan, represents sincerity, honesty, and the spirit of step-by-step cultivation. Kavalan distillery continues its tradition of passionate commitment to creating the premium whisky that Taiwan can offer.

Research & Development

KAVALAN SINGLE MALTS Taiwan’s Premium Whisky Kavalan distillery lies in the northeast of Taiwan in Yilan. It was established in record time with construction lasting only nine months. The first drop of the new make came off the spout of the safe on the 11th of March 2006 at 1530 hours.

The distillery was completed in 2006. Apart from purchasing copper stills abroad, Kavalan distillery brought in professional whisky consultant to implement highly specialized distilling and blending skills integrated with its more than 30-year beverage manufacturing experiences.

To make high quality whisky, Kavalan invited a world-class specialist to join its R&D team to offer the most informed opinions and suggestions, and the customised distilling knowledge was thus passed over to Kavalan distillery.

Kavalan has been very meticulous with its cask selection. The single cask range has been launched since the summer of 2009.

KAVALAN SINGLE MALTS Taiwan’s Premium WhiskyThe limited edition Solist Fino is matured in top Spanish Fino Sherry butts that were used for the wine making. A recent expression of Solist Vinho is fully matured in used wine barrels. The oak casks are made from American oak that has been seasoned in the open air for at least 24 months. This reduces the astringent effect of tannins and releases more vanilla spiciness and hints of herbs. After their use for wine maturation the casks are carefully shaved inside then gently toasted over an oak chip fire. This converts wine residues into a complex mixture of fruit flavours.

The quality of water is also one of the keys to the success of whisky. The distillery team draws the spring water from the Central Mountain and the Snowy Mountain Range to produce the whisky that matches Taiwanese tastes. Kavalan distillery is located at the cross boundary of Yilan Mountain and the sea. When the Pacific Ocean mist and the Snowy Mountain wind interact, the air circulating around of the casks will enhance the effects of “breathing”.

The “deeply asleep” whisky inside the casks will absorb the natural essence from the interactions of mountains and water, therefore creating its rich and charming characters.

Kavalan distillery produces the finest quality whisky from the purest water source which Yilan possesses. The whisky displays an accessible yet distinctive character. Kavalan will keep trying to improve and innovate the spirit of Taiwan.

It was awarded a gold best-in-class medal in International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) in 2011.

Tasting notes:

Colour: Lively and passionate amber.

Nose: Clean, elegant, floral (pleasant & refreshing fragrance of the butterfly orchid), fruity and seductive. With hints of honey, tropical fruits (mango in particular), pear drop, vanilla, coconuts and suggestions of chocolate.

Palate: A hint of sweet mango juice with that spicy complexity and gentle warmth on a medium, oily and citrus finish.

Product Description

Concertmaster, a single malt whisky that stresses the singular character yet does not lose its comprehensive harmony. Using Portuguese ruby, tawny and vintage Port wine casks as the main flavour, combining Kavalan distillery’s Taiwanese whisky features to compose a harmonic symphony. Presenting a natural colour without additives and its distinctive flavour of Port finish that is composed with layers of flavours and fragrances.

The air in Yilan, where Kavalan whisky is distilled, is considered to be the purest and freshest in Taiwan. It is the fresh air that gives Kavalan whisky its smooth, creamy and refreshing character. Kavalan Concertmaster single malt whisky is first matured in specially selected American oak casks and then finished in port barriques. Port, a fortified wine, is traditionally made in Douro valley in Portugal. The marrying in the barriques mellows the flavours and adds indefinable smoothness to the whisky.

Kavalan Concertmaster single malt whisky has been awarded several medals at the prestigious international spirits competitions.

Colour: Pleasant brownish red

Nose: Tropical fruitiness with honey, vanilla, coconut and candy floss

Palate: Rich bodied with natural sweetness and complexity

Kavalan Solist ex-BourbonKavalan Solist ex-Bourbon

Product Description

Kavalan Solist ex-Bourbon is a delightfully complex, multi-dimensional single malt whisky, with vanilla, fruits and coconut highlights.

Matured in hand selected fresh American ex-Bourbon casks, the whisky is available at cask strength and non chill-filtered hence it retains a fuller flavour of a natural single malt whisky.

It has been awarded the Best Rest of the World Single Malt Whisky 2010.

As well as International Spirits Challenge’s gold medal 2010 plus 2011 IWSC gold medal.

Tasting notes:

Colour: Cattle egret

Nose: Clean and fresh tropical fruitiness with pleasant vanilla, coconut and spices

Palate: Well-balanced natural sweetness, vanilla and oak spices, round and complex with silky smoothness

Kavalan Solist SherryKavalan Solist Sherry

Product Description

The process water is drawn from the springs in the Snow Mountain and Central Mountains imparting a smooth and creamy mouth feel to the whisky. Matured in Spanish top quality oloroso sherry casks in special editions, Kavalan Solist Sherry is bottled by hand at the distillery, without any colouring, chill-filtration, and thus a truly “single single malt whisky” as described by some! It is a naturally smooth and rich whisky with a complex character.

Kavalan Solist Sherry was also awarded Best Rest of the World Single Malt Whisky 2011 at the World Whisky Awards.

Tasting notes:

Colour: Dark and mouth-watering raisin

Nose:  Clean and complex with multi-layers of dried fruit, nuttiness and spices with some marzipan and vanilla touches to it as well

Palate: Rich, oily and full with pleasant dried fruit and spices that linger on in the mouth plus a hint of fine coffee

Kavalan Solist FinoKavalan Solist Fino

Product Description

Fino, Spanish for 'Fine', is the driest and most pale of all varieties of traditional sherry wine. It is best drunk comparatively young. Traditional Fino wine is usually non-sweet and is best consumed shortly after the bottle is opened in order to avoid losing its flavour. Kavalan's Fino, however, provides mild sweetness that excites the palate. Solist Fino was matured in the finest Fino Sherry butts that were used for the wine making.

Tasting notes:

Colour: Dark gold amber

Nose: Rich aroma of sherry, with creamy toffee and rich fudge qualities, and the slightest hint of chocolate blends with the fruity character of the spirit. The fruitiness is a complex, multi-layered blend of mango and over-ripe citrus fruit flavours that ends with a touch of green apples.

Palate: Natural sweetness on the tongue is accentuated with a gentle fudge flavour. The complex fruity flavours are layered with dry smoked wood aromas. This special anniversary edition of Solist cask strength whisky has a long finish and natural sweetness giving way to a pleasant mouth-drying sensation that leaves the connoisseur ready for the next sip!

Kavalan Solist VinhoKavalan Solist Vinho

Product Description

Vinho is fully matured in used American oak wine barrels that have been toasted and recharred in a way that brings out fruity vanilla notes from the whisky and wood overlaid on a delicate background of complex fruitiness. The oak casks are made from American oak that has been seasoned in the open air for at least 24 months. The oak is slow grown that results in a greater release of flavours into the whisky. This reduces the astringent effect of tannins and releases more vanilla spiciness and hints of herbs such as dill and lemon grass. The result is softness and added complexity. The casks have (deliberately) been used to mature both red and white wines which eventually will contribute the background complex fruitiness to Kavalan / Solist Vinhos. After their use for wine maturation the casks are carefully shaved inside then gently toasted over an oak chip fire for a strictly controlled period of time and temperature. This converts wine residues into a complex mixture of fruit flavours including lime, berry fruits and peaches. Then the casks are charred for a short period of time to release lashings of flavours such as vanilla, ice cream and caramelised sugars. The result is a more complex whisky than is possible than with whisky casks alone!

Tasting notes:

Colour: Deep autumn gold

Nose: Rich fusion of vanilla and caramelized sugars. Complex and multi-dimensional background of pepper, spice, dates and other fruits, such as ripe melon and mango together with kiwi and a delicate blend of citrus fruits burst.

Palate: The taste ends with clean and complex flavours embodying all that is best in the finest malt whiskies and a long aftertaste.

King Car Conductor Single Malt WhiskyKing Car Conductor Single Malt Whisky

Product Description

King Car single malt whisky is one of our three latest releases since the establishment of the distillery. We would like to make the flavour to the fullest and most rounded possible. And this time, because we would like to retain most of the flavours, the whisky is non-chill filtered and the alcoholic strength is raised to 46% v/v!

This is the first expression launched in the name of King Car which is the name of the conglomerate. The Chairman of the group, Mr. TT Lee, would like to have a single malt whisky that can also represent the company to show the kind of diversity, multi-area of business that we do, and this King Car single malt (a.k.a. Conductor) can truly represent the Group with its complex flavours, delicate aromas and multi-layers of background fruitiness!" It received a gold medal in 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SWSC) as well as a recent gold at the 2012 IWSC.

Tasting Notes:

Colour: Vivid amber that is as passionate as ever…

Nose: Excellently clean and freshly fruity single malt. A touch of papaya, banana and green apple, just to name a few. Pleasantly floral, delicate and complex with depths and multilayers of aromas, fragrances and nuances waiting to be discovered by each individual and connoisseur!

Palate: Sweet, rich, vanilla, banana but also coconut, a slight pleasant bitterness balancing the sweetness. A mouthfilling dram, more complex and sophisticated than you will ever imagine. A grand masterpiece to represent and bear the name of the Group – King Car.
