THE LAPOSTOLLE LEGACY: AN UNCOMPROMISING APPROACH TO QUALITY

Lapostolle WineLapostolle is one of the most dynamic and influential premium wine producers in Chile.

Founded in 1994, this family-owned winery was created by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband, Cyril de Bournet, members of the Marnier-Lapostolle legacy renowned for the production of Grand Marnier and French wines from their Loire estate Château de Sancerre.

The world-class quality delivered in every bottle of Lapostolle is a result of the superb Chilean terroir paired alongside rigorous French vineyard expertise practiced at the three Lapostolle vineyard sites in Casablanca Valley, Cachapoal Valley and Colchagua Valley.

To no surprise, the four unique labels produced – Casa, Cuvée Alexandre, Borobo and Clos Apalta – are consistently highly rated in the most influential wine trade publications.

The top-notch experience goes beyond a glass of Lapostolle wine being poured.  In 2011 the luxurious Lapostolle Residence, consisting of 4 private casitas (villas), was named the first Relais & Chateaux property in Chile – a demarcation signifying the crème de la crème of the hospitality industry.  With deluxe accommodations offering exceptional vineyard and mountain views of Chile, a creative and well-mastered culinary program and beautifully crafted wines, Lapostolle Residence is the only Relais & Chateaux property in Chile.

Lapostolle WineExceptional Winemaking: The Lapostolle Portfolio

When Alexandra Marnier-Lapostolle and her husband first arrived in Chile’s Colchagua Valley, just south of Santiago, they quickly realized its potential for producing world-class wines. This ideal setting, which was revitalized in 1995, was home to vines originating from pre-phylloxera rootstock brought from Bordeaux in the 1800’s.

With legendary wine expertise, Alexandra brought exceptional French winemaking practices to Chile and pioneered the development of fine quality wines from the region.

Additionally, organic and biodynamic practices have been implemented in the winery and today these management practices are implemented 100%, which means that Lapostolle vineyards use no pesticides and work in tandem with the land to fertilize and cultivate crops that are 100% certified organic.

In its short history, Lapostolle wines have consistently ranked highly (90+ points) among reputable wine trade publications, a testament of the rigorous standards implemented at the winery to produce outstanding wines. Some recent examples include:

  • The 2005 vintage of Lapostolle’s top cuvée, Clos Apalta, was recognized as the #1 wine in the world by Wine Spectator in a blind tasting of over 20,000 wines.  Similarly, the 2001 and 2000 vintages were named the #2 and #3 wines in the world, respectively, when they were released.
  • Wine Enthusiast awarded Lapostolle “New World Winery of the Year” in 2008.
  • Lapostolle wines have been ranked in Wine Spectator’s top 10 wines three times in a row.
  • The Cuvee Alexandre wines have received unprecedented world class ratings:
  • Cuvee Alexandre Chardonnay 8 vintages of 90+ ratings in a row
  • Cuvee Alexandre Merlot 7 vintages of 90+ ratings
  • Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon 7 vintages of 90+ ratings
  • Cuvee Alexandre Syrah 7 vintages of 90+ ratings

Lapostolle’s Mastery of Carmenère: An Exploration of Chile’s Signature Grape

The forgotten Bordeaux varietal, Carmenère, is embraced among oenophiles as Chile’s signature grape. Known for its ability to beautifully express the depth of the region’s terroir, characteristically, Carmenère produces a medium-body wine with gentle tannins and a deep red color. In its adopted country, Carmenère reaches its full potential. In these wines, aromatics richly filled with ripe berries and spices tempt the nose while the velvety texture can deliver earthy notes and flavors of dark chocolate and tobacco.

From its inception, it is Lapostolle – from the Marnier-Lapostolle French legacy – that has paved the way in the production of premium Chilean wines and serves as the first to truly appreciate the qualities of the once-thought-lost Bordeaux varietal.

Today Lapostolle remains a benchmark for premium wines of Chile and showcases its mastery of the Carmenère grape by merging French expertise with rigorous wine making practices and a superb terroir planted with original, old growth Carmenère vines. Boasting an adventurous Carmenère portfolio, Lapostolle demonstrates its continued leadership beginning with its crown jewel wine – Clos Apalta – through its newest and perhaps most innovative wine project – Explorers Collection. Take a moment to discover the exquisite taste of Carmenère by Lapostolle.

  • Lapostolle WineClos Apalta is an oenophile’s coveted jewel. The world-class blend, made up of predominantly Carmenère (with Cabernet and Merlot), is hand-crafted in small batches with a precision that highlights its Bordeaux traditions and standards to preserve the potential of the grapes.  If ever a winemaking philosophy of reflecting the terroir existed, it is most evident with Clos Apalta. Expressing the diversity of the hillside colluvial granite soils from the Apalta blocks, this wine has been previously hailed “Wine of the Year” by a major wine trade publication and has cemented its place among the top wines of the world. Each new vintage of Clos Apalta demands equal authority among serious wine connoisseurs.
  • Cuvée Alexandre Carmenère, a true expression of its origin, comes from single vineyard selection of Lapostolle’s Apalta vineyard. Showcasing a distinct blend of predominantly Carmenère grapes (coupled with a touch of Merlot), the wine demonstrates great balance and depth. The resulting wine can be attributed to a rigorously maintained terroir that includes a hillside vineyard with granite soil and a special, sandier Carmenère area known as “the Island.” Surrounded by creeks, the Island creates great drainage, a key factor to producing mature Carmenère grapes.
  • Casa Carmenère is a simpler and more affordable every day wine that does not sacrificeLapostolle’s outstanding dedication to a superior standard of quality. Casa Carmenère goes beyond any ordinary table wine as it delivers the bright and vivid, fruit-forward flavors that define the Casa tier. These wines are hand-harvested and produced from 100% Carmenère grapes sourced from the Rapel Valley, the most ideal region in Chile for this varietal to flourish.
  • Explorers Collection, a new and special project for Lapostolle, pays homageto France’s Vins de Garage concept, which began in the 90’s by innovative winemakers hoping to craft more adventurous wines that deemphasize the traditional use of terroir. Lapostolle winemaker, Andrea Leon, is the first to initiate this concept in Chile with the Explorers Collection Carmenère series: a small-batch, hand-made production that demonstrates the diversity of Carmenère in three distinct regions of Chile. By exploring the Carmenère grape in Lapostolle’s Apalta vinayards – hillside mountains facing south that span east to west towards the coastal region – this project embodies Lapostolle’s continued examination and depth of focus on Chile’s signature grape.

Rarely does a winery take the time and energy to successfully explore a single varietal with such an extensive appreciation as Lapostolle has done through its outstanding collection of Carmenère wines. The results remains clear through time: Lapostolle’s leadership with the Carmenère grape remains at the forefront of innovation and continues to underscore the brand’s presence as the premium Chilean wine producer.

Lapostolle WineRelais & Chateaux Lapostolle Residence: The Premiere Luxury Experience in Chile

The Lapostolle Residence, part of the Lapostolle Clos Apalta winery, is nestled between the foothills of the Chilean Coastal Cordillera (mountain range) and the rolling hills of the Colchagua Valley. As one of the most unique places in Chile to experience, the Lapostolle Residence delivers sophisticated comfort, exceptional winemaking practices and culinary mastery.

In early 2011, the Lapostolle Residence became the first property to be recognized by the Relais & Châteaux collection, an international organization whose rigorous standards signify the crème de la crème in the hospitality industry.

Sophisticated Comfort

The lush landscape surrounding the Lapostolle Residence boasts picturesque views offering more than 650 hectares of hillside and vineyards for exploration.

The awe-inspiring, unobstructed views can be appreciated from the “Main House” of the residence – a space where guests will enjoy everything from a romantic candlelit dinner al fresco to a dip in the infinity pool or arrange meetings and private events – or from one of the four private and serene casitas (villas/suites).

Every detail of design and architecture serves to enhance the winery’s connection to the exceptional natural terrain of the region.

Named after each grape varietal used to blend the property’s award-winning wine, Clos Apalta, each casita was tastefully decorated by Alexandra Marnier-Lapostolle herself, with décor inspired by its namesake grape.

  • Carmenère suite: Inspired by the signature Chilean grape, Carmenère, this suite rests on the highest peak of the vineyard and evokes elegance with turquoise, pearl white and chocolate accents.
  • Merlot suite: The sweetness of the Merlot grape sets the mood for a romantic theme in this villa that incorporates rose wood, white pearl and dark gold into an amorous color scheme.
  • Petit Verdot suite: The vibrancy and intensity of the Petit Verdot grape is mimicked in this suite that is highlighted with lively marigolds and bold oranges.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon suite: Inspired by the concentrated but elegant flavors in Cabernet Sauvignon, this suite couples olive greens and natural wood colors for a simple and fresh finish.

Each with a terrace and small garden, the stunning views from the casitas can be appreciated while unwinding in a more private setting. Lapostolle Residence can also make arrangements for in-room relaxation massages and other special requests. The hospitable staff can accommodate guests with a more adventurous spirit looking to explore the beautiful property and surrounding area via horse-back, mountain bike or a hike.

The Design

Lapostolle Wine

The unique design concept of the Lapostolle Residence, developed by renown Chilean architect, Roberto Benavente Riquelme, places emphasis on core values and commitment to the terroir and nature in relation to wine making.

It all started with the excavation during the initial building process. Instead of discarding the large rocks that were found at this time, they were instead converted into floor slabs and placed throughout the winery maintaining a harmonious relationship with nature.

Furthermore, the entire wall in the wine library, which rests comfortably at the lowest level and is flanked by a state of the art glass tasting table in the room above, is etched out from the natural granite rocks that already existed in that space. The surrounding beams on the face of the building, of which there are exactly 24, represent the number of months it takes to produce the extraordinary wine, Clos Apalta, while the sundial on the roof of the winery is comprised of 5 granite stones.

The stones are an allegory of the yearly biological cycle of the vine: Shooting, Flowering, Fruit set, Veraison and Harvest and each individual stone is located at the season and hour when the vineyard is undergoing that process.

The construction was conceptualized so that the wine making process also naturally flowed downwards with the aid of gravity only. These small, but exact details, create an organic space for the production and appreciation of Lapostolle’s quality Chilean wines.

Culinary Mastery

Artfully prepared traditional Chilean cuisine, pairing exceptionally well with the Lapostolle wine portfolio, is one of the savory experiences at the Residence. Highly trained chefs develop and execute seasonal menus where many of the ingredients can be sourced from the on-premise organic and biodynamic gardens; when ingredients are not available directly they are sourced from local purveyors. A sampling of delicious dishes and wine pairings include:

  • Traditional Chilean empanadas filled with melted cheese and mushrooms, paired with a crisp glass of Lapostolle Casa Sauvignon Blanc.
  • A velvety cream of corn soup topped with crispy fried basil leaves, paired with Lapostolle Cuvée Alexandre Chardonnay.
  • Fresh grilled salmon with a Merlot reduction alongside spring quinoa and roasted seasonal vegetables, paired with the bold Lapostolle Borobo.
  • Organic beef steak with a Carmenère sauce accompanied with a side of traditional Charquican(mixture of potatoes, corn, onions, pumpkin, minced meat and sometimes peas), paired with Lapostolle Clos Apalta.

In addition to a well-thought out menu, the highly trained wait staff create the most hospitable environment whether enjoying a casual aperitif, a romantic dinner or an elegant evening dining. The result at Lapostolle Residence is a highly regarded experience that expresses the region’s best attributes.
